Entered Apprentice Catechisms Practice Test

How were you received?

With a handshake and bow.

With a blessing and a prayer.

With a ceremonial hug.

On the point of a sharp instrument pressing my naked left breast, which was to teach me that as that was an instrument of torture to my flesh, so should the recollection of it be to my conscience should I ever presume to reveal any of the secrets of Freemasonry unlawfully.

This item tests how the initiation into Freemasonry is portrayed as a turning point that forever binds a member to the vows of secrecy. The described moment—having a sharp instrument pressed to the breast—uses a stark, symbolic image to impress upon the initiate that the oath is serious and not to be betrayed. The line about the instrument being a reminder to conscience ties the memory of this ordeal to the duty of keeping secrets; if the member ever reveals them unlawfully, the memory of the pain and the solemn pledge should deter that action.

So, the best answer is the one that presents the reception as a dramatic, moral commitment reinforced by a vivid, memorable ritual. The other gestures—handshake and bow, blessing and prayer, ceremonial hug—do not convey the same weight or the same explicit connection between the ritual, the oath, and the lifelong obligation to secrecy.
